Fondren Library owns over 3 million items in microfilm, microfiche and microprint formats. Many of these publications can be identified using the online catalog, but some are not cataloged or are only partially cataloged and require the use of paper or online guides.  For more information see the list of the major microforms sets by subject on the Microforms LibGuide. It includes newspapers available in a microform format.

Fondren Library has moved most of its microfilm collection to the remote storage facility, the Library Service Center or LSC. (The Houston Post and Chronicle are both on microfilm, but remain in Fondren Library.) Microfiche and microcards/opaque will remain at Fondren.

When you search the catalog and see LSC as the location, if you are a community borrower without a Rice ID, please fill out the LSC item request form for community borrowers. To find the form click on the large blue "Place Hold" button and locate the link to the form at the top of the page that displays. It is also available from the library's home page, library.rice.edu under Request (LSC Retrieval Request). You may check out 25 reels at a time for one week. Decisions about a longer check out period  will be made on a case-by-case basis at Circulation. The requested microfilm will be retrieved from the LSC, placed at Circulation and checked out upon pickup to a Generic account. You will need to leave an ID to obtain the reels. There will be no exceptions to this requirement. For community borrowers ONLY the reels may be stored at Circulation for the week until time to return to the LSC.

If you have a Rice ID, please click the "Place Hold" button and select which microfilm(s) you want retrieved. There is a limit of 25 requested per day. You will be asked to log in using your NetID and password. If you get an error message, please use the community borrowers form mentioned above and note your error message on the form. Please pick up the microfilms at Circulation. The film will be checked out to you for one week with a one week renewal if requested. Rice affiliates who have a limit to the number of items they may check out (15 for family members), may only check out microfilms up to that limit.

Professors, please contact Circulation (circ@rice.edu) and cc the Kelley Center (govhelp@rice.edu) if you need a different arrangement for your research or classes.

Items are delivered to Fondren Library from the LSC Monday-Friday, but not on weekends.  If you request before 9 am, the film will be available later in the morning (around 10:30). If you request before 2 pm, the film will be available around 3:30 pm. If you need the film for the weekend, please be sure to request it before 2 pm on Friday. Community borrowers, please allow extra time for delivery since a librarian must process your form.

Since requesting is done online, you can fill out the form from home or office and have the microfilm ready for viewing when you come to the library.
